She began her law enforcement career in 1991 as a dispatcher with the DeKalb County Department of Public Safety in DeKalb County, Georgia. While at DeKalb County she advanced to Senior Communications Operator and was responsible for training and evaluation new employees. During this time she volunteered as an auxiliary officer with the City of Conyers Police Department Reserve Unit where she was also responsible for re-establishing and facilitating their Exploring Program. In 1995, in addition to working full-time at DeKalb County she attended Basic Mandate Training at the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center on her own time. Tanya was hired by the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Police Department in 1996.
